My Purpose in The Great Third Act of Life

My purpose in life is to be a bright, shining example of what it is to be Healthy, Wealthy and Happy while chasing a dream in the Great Third Act of Life.

Do you know what your purpose is? I found my purpose in life this year. Actually it would be more accurate to say that I found my purpose for my Third Act this year. What am I talking about?     I subscribe to a general concept that life is broken into four parts.

Act 1. Development (birth to age of majority)

Act 2. Achievement (career success, finding a mate, children etc)

Act 3 . Fulfillment ( Midlife – What fills the soul and what do you do when the nest empties and you are back to focusing on you again).

Act 4 (Finality and Preparation for Moving on.)

Of course there is a great variation as to when we each enter and leave each of these stages. Some start certain Acts early and other leave them later, but that doesn’t mater much. I don’t remember thinking about needing a purpose statement in the First Act. In the Second Act I was aware that I was trying to be the best husband I could be and raise my children right (whatever that meant).

Now I find myself on the edge of what I love to call my Great Third Act of Life. My kids are grown, I am single again and I am scared, excited, frustrated and rearing to go all at the same time. Let’s get it on, eh?

So why did I choose my purpose? I want to be an example. Why? I have always believed that setting a good example is the best way to lead, teach and influence anyone whether they are your child, a friend or an employee. I have a goal to be that older guy everyone knows who just is living and enjoying life at a high level. I want to be respected and my way of gaining your respect is to be a good example.

In addition to a Written Purpose I also have a written Vision of myself , written Goals and written Core Values. I will be sharing these in coming posts. These goals represent who I want to be.

I have no advice as to what your purpose should be. I can only tell you that I spent a solid year thinking about it, reading about purpose and values and developing my own purpose. I wrote it all down because I believe that act of writing down your goals and thoughts makes them more real, more consistent and more likely to stick to you.

I repeat my purpose out loud to myself multiple times a day. In the morning, in the evening and many times in between. Do you have a purpose for your life? I hope my example might inspire you to think about your purpose. Peace.
